Amazing women’ across Cheshire and Wirral will be recognised once again at the coveted Cheshire Woman of the Year Awards 2025 – with nominations now open for entry.

The award recognises incredible women in the region and has raised more than £300k for local children’s charities since it started up in 1984 – and now celebrates its 40th birthday!

Last year’s ‘Woman of the Year’ was Wirral-based, Mel Kelly, who was recognised for her incredible bravery when, at the age of just 22, she was diagnosed with an aggressive brain tumour. Although in intensive care and unable to walk or even dress herself, Mel managed to defy odds by recovering to since become an official ambassador for The Brain Tumour Charity, raising thousands of pounds through charitable projects.

Awards founder and Chair of the Cheshire Woman of the Year Awards Committee, Sylvia Cheater MBE, urged people to get nominating for the 2025 awards. She said: “Do you know an amazing woman in Cheshire, like Mel, who deserves to be recognised? Perhaps your mother, daughter, sister or friend has an inspiring, heartfelt or courageous story to tell? Or maybe a colleague or your boss inspires you? Or do you have a neighbour who is always helping others? Now is the time to nominate her.”

The Cheshire Woman of the Year Awards recognises amazing women from all walks of life who have shown great personal courage, achieved outstanding professional success or given exceptional service to their local community.

The Cheshire Woman of the Year celebration is a way of paying tribute to all the women across the Cheshire and Wirral region who have made a real difference to their communities, many of whom are unsung heroes.

Thanks to the generosity of sponsors, it also raises much-needed funds for children’s charity, NSPCC. And in the current economic climate, the need is even greater. All the money raised is used to help children and families in Cheshire and Wirral – including support for ChildLine.

Sylvia added: “The Cheshire Woman Awards began all the way back in 1984 and is a wonderful way to raise much-needed funds for charity. Since then, it has grown to become an important date in Cheshire’s charity fundraising calendar thanks to our wonderful women and our supportive sponsors over the last four decades, so we really can’t thank them enough.”

Deborah Sefton, Community Fundraising Manager for the NSPCC, said: “Please get nominating amazing women for the Cheshire Woman Awards 2025. Over the last 40 years, truly remarkable women have been recognised by the Committee, and much-needed funds raised for the NSPCC.

“Thanks to their generosity, we will be able to reach even more vulnerable children when they need us the most – whether it’s through Childline, our Helpline, in schools or one of our therapeutic service centres.”

A nominated woman should live, work, or have been born in Cheshire, including Wirral. She can be nominated for her contribution to her community, personal courage or outstanding professional achievement.
